Skills and Qualifications

Grade 7:
• PhD in public policy, political science, economics, management, social innovation, public health, communication, heritage OR equivalent research experience
• Experience conducting high-quality research and publications
• Experience with rapid reviews, systematic reviews, qualitative/quantitative methods
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple research tasks, deadlines, and data
• Strong writing, presentation, and policy communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams

Grade 8 (Senior Level):
• All Grade 7 requirements plus:
• Proven leadership of high-quality research projects
• Experience overseeing systematic reviews and multi-stakeholder research
• Lead author of high-impact publications
• Expertise in project management, collaboration, and knowledge exchange

Desirable (Grade 7 & 8):
• Professional qualification in place-based or wellbeing roles
• Experience in co-production research
• Arts-based research methods (participatory mapping, visual storytelling, etc.)
• Experience synthesising multidisciplinary literatures, community-led value frameworks
• Experience working with marginalized communities relating to policy change

ExperienceGrade 7: Early–mid career researchers Grade 8: Established independent researchers with leadership experience
SalaryGrade 7: £38,784 – £46,049 p.a. (pro-rata), Grade 8: £47,389 – £56,535 p.a. (pro-rata)

Organisation Details

The University of Stirling is part of a major UKRI-funded Local Policy Innovation Partnership (FORTH20), working with Scottish Government, Scottish Water, SEPA, and regional communities. The project focuses on policy innovation, environmental value, community wellbeing, water governance, and cross-sector collaboration across the Forth Water Basin.

Job Description

The Research Fellows will support and lead (depending on grade) the delivery phase of FORTH20, focusing on:
• Conducting new research using mixed methods (qualitative, quantitative, systematic reviews)
• Analysing policy processes, bottlenecks, and opportunities for water-related policy change
• Supporting or leading Innovation/Policy Challenge Labs
• Working with stakeholders across government, communities, businesses, and environmental bodies
• Producing high-quality outputs: reports, journal articles, blogs, presentations
• Co-producing insights on:
o Policy change & governance
o Cross-industry innovation
o Community storytelling & cultural-water heritage
o Value-frameworks for water (economic, environmental, social, emotional)
o Place-based wellbeing approaches (‘blue spaces’)
• Managing multiple research priorities and deadlines
• Representing FORTH20 within the UKRI LPIP network
