Skills and Qualifications

PhD (or equivalent) in Geography, Urban Studies, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, or a related field

Experience• Research focus on urbanisation, spatial inequalities, mobility, and/or WASH • Familiarity with spatial analysis, quantitative methods, and/or qualitative fieldwork is advantageous • Strong record of academic publications • English fluency (C1 or above); additional regional languages (India, Ethiopia, etc.) are a plus • Suitable for post-PhD researchers within 6 years of completion seeking independent research track
SalaryCZK 61,000/month (Full-time) CZK 36,600/month (0.6 FTE) Paid 12 times per year

Organisation Details

Charles University, founded in 1348, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. The Department of Social Geography and Regional Development at the Faculty of Science leads cutting-edge research on urbanisation, development, migration, and environmental health across diverse global regions. This postdoc position will be mentored by Prof. Josef Novotný and contributes to expanding the department’s work in late-urbanising contexts such as India and Ethiopia.

Job Description

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will:

• Conduct research on urbanisation, mobility, and environmental services (especially WASH)
• Study spatial inequalities and urban transitions in developing or non-core regions
• Collaborate with faculty on current and future research projects
• Contribute to academic publications, proposals, and conferences
• Participate in team meetings, workshops, and (optional) lectures or mentoring
• Be encouraged to develop your own research agenda aligned with departmental goals
• Opportunity to extend or upgrade the position depending on funding availability
