Skills and Qualifications

1. Advanced university degree in housing studies, law, international development, urban planning, or related social sciences
2. A relevant postgraduate qualification or PhD is desirable
3. Minimum 7 years’ experience in research, data analysis, and report writing
4. Proven experience in housing-related research and slum upgrading
5. Familiarity with international organizations or UN entities (preferably with a housing mandate)
6. Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)
7. Knowledge in drafting reports, technical guidelines, and communications materials related to housing and slums

ExperienceAt least 7 years of relevant experience in housing and slum transformation, with a research and policy development focus
SalaryConsultant rate as per UN-Habitat policy

Organisation Details

UN-Habitat’s Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS) is dedicated to developing inclusive, gender-responsive solutions for land tenure, affordable housing, and slum upgrading. Operating under the Global Solutions Division, the LHSS supports national and local partners in advancing secure tenure, equitable housing access, and sustainable slum transformation through research, capacity building, and global policy advocacy.

Job Description

Under the guidance of the LHSS thematic lead and supervision of the Chief of LHSS, the Consultant will:
• Provide technical expertise on affordable housing policies, inclusive finance, and slum transformation strategies
• Contribute to proposal development and project conceptualization
• Draft case studies, reports, and implementation guidelines for sustainable housing and slum transformation initiatives
• Support communications content for the housing platform in collaboration with the UN-Habitat media team
The role is central to shaping UN-Habitat’s global housing knowledge base and supporting scalable solutions for housing and slum challenges.
