Skills and Qualifications

1. PhD (or near completion) in Mechanical, Civil, Architectural, or Environmental Engineering (or related)
2. Proven expertise in at least one of the following: ventilation design, indoor air quality, building physics, HVAC systems, or thermal comfort
3. Experience conducting empirical or field-based IEQ measurements
4. Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
5. Excellent written and spoken English
6. Independent project and team management within large-scale collaborations

ExperienceDoctoral-level research experience in relevant fields (1–3 years preferred post-PhD, but open to new PhD graduates as well)
SalaryCompetitive (with Swiss benefits, annual contract renewable up to multi-year appointment)

The Human-Oriented Built Environment Lab (HOBEL), located at the Smart Living Lab in Fribourg, conducts cutting-edge research on indoor environmental quality and its impact on health, comfort, and performance. The lab plays a critical role in the Horizon Europe RENOMIZE project focused on scalable, digitized building renovation systems.

Job Description

1. Lead and conduct field-based IEQ monitoring campaigns in demonstration buildings
2. Collect occupant feedback and assess renovation impacts on environmental quality
3. Model seasonal IEQ performance and evaluate commercial ventilation/filtration strategies
4. Design context-specific IEQ solutions for residential and public buildings
5. Collaborate with European project partners, contribute to HOBEL’s broader initiatives
6. Represent EPFL as the IEQ expert in the RENOMIZE consortium
7. Optionally develop independent research projects within HOBEL’s thematic scope
