Preferred areas of study:
Water and Environmental Sciences, Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Environment, Development Studies or any other related field.

- Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications.
Good writing skills in English and Arabic is an advantage.
- Applicants should be interested in (i) water and sanitation, climate change and water, financing, partnership development, WOPs approach, and (ii) partnership development and resource mobilization.
- Applicants should have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes the willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

ExperienceNo working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Academic background or previous experience closely related to this internship is desirable. . Ability to keep work organized, overview tasks/engagements/meetings of the day ahead, and prioritize tasks is required

Organisation Details

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). Together with governments, the agency is responsible for promoting and consolidating collaboration with all partners, including local authorities and private and non-governmental organizations, in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UN-Habitat leads the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), which helps water and sanitation operators help one another. GWOPA is an international network created in 2009 to support operators through Water Operator Partnerships (WOPs) – not-for-profit peer support partnerships between water and sanitation operators to enhance their capacity and performance and provide better service to more people in support of the SDGs. The Government of Germany currently hosts the GWOPA Secretariat. The interns will be under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat, Arab Region, Global Solutions Division / Urban Practices Branch / Urban Basic Services Section / Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), Project Management Officer.

Job Description

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the interns’ assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of one professional staff of GWOPA and work under the overall supervision of
the Officer-in-Charge the interns will:
– Assist with GWOPA’s Arab Region WOP Platform development.
– Research on Arab water utilities, key challenges, and opportunities.
– Assist in designing surveys and analyzing data.
– Assist with writing and developing programme proposals, concept notes, project briefs and documents.
– Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of GWOPA.

Duties may include but are not limited to:
– Assist in preparing draft concept papers, background documents, and position papers.
– Conduct research on pertinent topics related to water and sanitation.
– Assist in program management’s administration, budgeting and financial management aspects.
