The “Over de ring Zuid” project is part of a major territorial reflection on the future of peripheral infrastructure in Antwerp and the possibility of covering it in certain places, in order to create opportunities for connections, public spaces and future developments. It is a question of creating the continuity of the city beyond the infrastructural rupture that was introduced in the 60s. The sector of intervention consists of 4 km of infrastructure with all the urban and landscape approaches: how can potential coverage be a means of a gradual transformation of this territory?
The ring project is an illustration of the exceptional opportunities that are created thanks to the idea of putting road infrastructure in the background and prioritizing the city of tomorrow with its networks of soft mobility and public transport, with collective spaces and ecological reserves, with mixed urban developments and with nodes of metropolitan and neighborhood activities, while keeping the large landscape as a framework for the structuring of continuities around the ring.
In the grand vision, pilot projects are formulated, strategic because they are able to initiate a gradual transformation of the sector. Some of the pilot projects act on important continuities along the entire ring, for example hydrological, ecological, anti-pollution and pollution strategies, while others develop a spatial project for key places or connections for neighbourhoods around or even for metropolitan nodes.
The process of defining the guidelines of this project was an intense dialogue with the inhabitants and citizen groups, which made it possible to understand the different points of view of the problems and opportunities of the site. Through workshops, walks, presentations and individual dialogues, a link has been built between designers and users.
