In the heart of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, a new urban marvel has emerged, marking a significant evolution in public space design. The Other Nest 2023 stands as a testament to the transformative power of imaginative architecture and urban planning. This project, commissioned by the visionary New Hope Group, follows the resounding success of The Nest in early 2021, further cementing the partnership between innovation and community enhancement.

Designed by the renowned 100 Architects (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., The Other Nest is not just a sequel but an expansion of creative thought and execution. The team, led by the talents of Marcial Jesús, Javier González, Mónica Páez, and their distinguished colleagues, has once again brought to life a concept that transcends traditional play spaces. This endeavor represents the ethos of urban rejuvenation, embedding the joy of play into the fabric of Chengdu’s urban landscape, making it a beacon of cultural and recreational vibrancy.

A Vision Brought to Life

At its core, The Other Nest is inspired by the miracle of life and the joy of discovery. The project weaves a narrative of nurturing and growth, symbolized by the iconic birds – a motif carried over from its predecessor. These sculptures serve not only as visual landmarks but as the heart of a playscape where imagination takes flight. Children and adults alike are invited to climb, slide, and explore, turning each visit into an adventure.

Surrounding these avian centrepieces, circular motifs spread across the landscape, creating platforms for rest, play, and social interaction. This geometric harmony introduces a rhythm to the space, making it an urban symphony of form and function.

The introduction of a meandering running track ties these elements together, transforming The Other Nest into a continuous loop of activity and engagement. This feature encapsulates the project’s dual nature – a playground for the young and a circuit for all, promoting health, happiness, and community bonding.

Multifunctionality and Inclusivity

Innovation and inclusivity are at the heart of The Other Nest. The space is dotted with a variety of features designed to cater to every age and interest. From the exhilaration of a sunken sandpit and trampoline to the strategic calm of Chinese chess tables, the playscape is a canvas for physical and mental engagement. Elderly exercise equipment and shaded seating areas ensure that the project is a welcoming space for the entire community.

The landscape itself plays a crucial role in the project’s identity. Circular green spaces provide a lush, vibrant backdrop to the colorful EPDM flooring, which is not only safe but visually stimulating. These areas act as natural buffers, creating a serene oasis amidst the urban bustle.

A Nighttime Spectacle

As dusk falls, The Other Nest transforms into a luminous wonderland. Decorative lighting traces the contours of the playscape, highlighting its dynamic shapes and infusing the space with a magical ambiance. Eggshell-shaped canopies and lampposts illuminate the area, ensuring that the joy of The Other Nest extends well into the evening.

The New Hope Group’s continued trust and support have been pivotal in bringing this urban wonder to life.

Spanning an area of 2,200 m^2, The Other Nest stands as a built manifesto of joy, community, and urban innovation. Located in Chengdu, China, it is not just a space but a destination, inviting residents and visitors to explore, play, and connect.
