Skills and Qualifications

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in urban planning, urban design, urban geography, urban economics, development studies, urban governance, regional planning, civil engineering, architecture, or any other related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

ExperienceAt least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in community engagement, spatial planning, and urban design. Demonstrated capacity to supervise the graphic representation of ideas and concepts and familiarity with graphic design packages are required. Experience in working with government institutions at the national and local levels in India is an advantage. Experience in working with teams and with partners is required. Experience within the United Nations common system will be an advantage. Proficiency in design and illustration software is necessary.

Organisation Details

In cooperation with UNIDO, UN-Habitat is implementing a Global Environment Fund (GEF-6) supported project on sustainable cities to be piloted in five cities (Bhopal, Jaipur, Mysore, and Shillong, Vijayawada, Guntur).

Job Description

Under the overall supervision of the Country Programme Manager, UN-Habitat India, the Consultant – Urban Designer will work under the overall guidance of the Lead – Urban Lab, Planning, Finance, and Economy Section, HQ, and Senior Urban Planner, UN-Habitat India to undertake the following activities:
• Provide technical support related to strategic urban planning and area-based transformative projects to achieve the project objectives;
• Write technical reports and summaries on the ‘sustainable city strategies’ which are area-based (spatial/territorial) strategic plans and interventions based on the city profiles and diagnostics of issues and potential opportunities, focusing on the objective of improving sustainability and resilience of the city in the medium term (5-year development timeframe).
• Support online and in-person workshops with community and local authorities to draft multi-sectoral and incremental area-based plans and citywide sustainable strategies (as applicable)
• Collaborate with field personnel to assure quality and timely implementation of ongoing and upcoming activities in coordination with relevant colleagues and the Country Programme Manager;
• Formulate, develop and prepare a technical documentation report on the methodology devised for the calculation of climate savings through the implementation of the ‘sustainable
city strategies’.
• Review and consolidate comments received on deliverables produced by the project team prior to submission to the clients, with a view to ensuring quality assurance and quality standards expected of international organizations;
