The journey of the future is for NS a question for today. Mobility is a necessity: to get to work, to take the kids out of town, to get the personal care you need. Because of the growing demand for mobility, we face some serious challenges.

In the document “Public Transport in 2040”, the government and its stakeholders set ambitious targets with regard to sustainability, passenger satisfaction and capacity. A seamless mobility system that integrates public, shared and private transport is the only way forward.

This document shows what the door-to-door journey could look like from the perspective of the passenger. Digitalisation and new modalities are going to change our journey as will our spatial environment. We will focus on the latter in this document and illustrate that station surroundings and our route to the station also need to change.

Preparing for this new journey is something that concerns many stakeholders and involves long lead times. Given the ambitions for 2040, it raises the question of “if not now, then when?” We encourage local and national governments to share ideas and join us in the planning process.

The purpose of this Vision for the Future document is to provide insight into what is needed to meet the intended goals for public transport in 2040. We identify the choices to be made and the associated dilemmas so as to determine the necessary steps, get the challenges on the agenda and activate the various stakeholders at an early stage.

Together, we are on the way to imagining and anticipating mobility and the associated quality of life for 2040. Our ambitions are big and so are the challenges and uncertainties. We feel that the best way to predict the future is to design it. We hope you enjoy our first brush strokes.
