A graduate degree holder in architecture or urban policy/planning; or a post-graduate degree holder in social science, based in Chennai or willing to relocate to Chennai, with the following:
• Domain knowledge of urban poverty
• Experience in working with slum communities
• Fluency in English and Tamil;
• Well-developed English writing skills;
• Ability to work and learn independently;
• Good time management and organization skills;
• Interpersonal skills to develop relationships and liaise with stakeholders from different backgrounds

Habitat Forum (INHAF), an Indian non-profit registered in 1999, is a network of professionals, civil society organizations, people engaged in academic and research work and others working in the human settlements development field, both rural and urban. Committed to better human settlements, especially the conditions of living of the poor and the low income groups, it engages in studying development action and advocates required changes, focused on inclusivity, sustainability and equity. Informality, urban and rural housing, poverty, urbanisation, the role of professional education and that of civil society in development planning and action are its main areas of work.

Job Description

The Project Associate will focus on background research, identification of and engagement with stakeholders (including communities), formulate, implement and monitor project activities pertaining to:
• Livelihoods and settlements of the urban poor in Chennai, especially settlements located near water bodies and on the coast.
• Policy and practice of provision of basic services, and assessment of adequacy and quality of basic services to these settlements.
• Policy and practice of supporting climate adaptation in-situ, or resettlement and rehabilitation.
